Dress-down Friday

“Up” often means “to a higher position”, as in “to stand up” or “to get up”. It can also mean “improvement”, as in “to dress up”, which means “to put on formal clothes”.
By contrast, “down” means “to a lower position”, as in “to lie down” or “to sit down”. But it can also mean “to a lower level”. For example, “to dress down” means “to put on informal clothes”.
Friday is a special day for everyone in western culture, because it means the sacrosanct weekend is not too far away… In the 1990s, to celebrate this special day, some people, in the relaxed Californian business culture, created a new concept: “Dress-down Friday”, also called “Casual Friday”.
However some firms decided to get rid of “Dress-down Fridays” because some employees started acting like Friday was the beginning of the weekend!
